How to Wake Up on Time when you have ADHD

Updated: Nov 20

A person is sitting up in bed with a white comforter draped over them, holding a gray mug. Next to the bed on a nightstand is a ringing alarm clock.

Why is it so hard to wake up in the morning?

Many of us with ADHD struggle with sleep. We have a hard time getting our bodies to bed, falling asleep, staying asleep and of course waking up!

Many women stay up late when the house is quiet trying to get things done without interruptions or distractions. Many teens and young adults are the most hyperactive in the evening. Many of us have cumulative exhaustion, never getting enough sleep.

The ability to wake up drastically impacts time, causing us to rush around, often being late for work or school.

Try this

  • Snooze it. When your alarm rings, take your meds then hit snooze. By the time the alarm goes off again, the meds will be working, making it easier to stay up.

  • Picture it. Try the Alarmy app (it has a low monthly fee). You take a picture of something in another room. When the alarm goes off, you have to get up and hold the camera up to the object you took a picture of in order to turn it off. By this time, you are up and out of bed. You can choose various 'missions' to accomplish before the alarm turns off, such as simple math problems or retyping an uplifting affirmation. Making it fun can go a long way in getting you going!

  • Brighten it. The Peaceful Progression Alarm Clock simulates the rising of the sun, getting incrementally brighter as the alarm rings.

  • Catch it. The Clocky Alarm Clock rolls around the room when the alarm goes off. You have to get up and catch it to turn it off.

  • Launch it. The Flying Alarm Clock has a propeller that launches when the alarm goes off. You have to find the propeller and return it to the clock to turn off the alarm.

  • Shake it. The Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock is an extra loud dual alarm clock with a bed shaker. You place a device under the mattress that connects to the alarm. When the alarm rings the device causes the mattress to vibrate, helping you both hear and feel the alarm.

Ask yourself

  • What type of alarm works best for me?
