The Wheel of Life: A Snapshot of Life Today that will Energize you in Moving Forward

Setting and achieving goals may seem difficult when you have ADHD. Goals can feel as if they are pass or fail, putting the pressure on.

What is the Wheel of Life?

The wheel of life is a fun and visual tool that supports you in creating goals and achieving life balance. It divides your life into eight categories that look like pie slices. The various areas may include your environment, finances, fun and recreation as well as personal growth.

How does it work?

With each category, you have the opportunity to rate yourself according to the level of satisfaction you have. There is absolutely no judgement! Your reasons for rating yourself in an area are completely your own. For example, regarding finances, you may have money, but you don’t pay attention to it, so you may rate yourself lower. You might rate yourself a 6 or 7 in an area, but if that is ok for you, that is perfectly fine.

You get to choose.

Next you want to color in the various “pie slices” of your wheel, preferably in different colors. At a glance you will see how balanced your wheel is. If it were a wheel on a car or bicycle, would it turn easily?

The smaller sections of your wheel will show you areas that you may want to improve. Be sure to date your wheel so you can look back and see your progress.

The wheel of life supports you in both making and taking steps towards your goals.

Other Ways to Use a Wheel

You can use a blank wheel to create your own categories in any given area. For example, you may have a wheel that looks at wellness. In this case, each of your pie slices would be topics that apply to wellness.

Another great way to use a wheel is with another person that you are in a relationship with. When each person fills out their own wheel, you will see very quickly how each of you view a certain area of life. It can be a great tool to jumpstart discussions.

An important use of the wheel of life is to determine if you are living according to your values. For example, I may say I value my spouse. But by using the wheel, I may realize that I don't spend very much time with them.
